What is a Modification?
A modification is a change made to the curriculum or instructional materials to better meet the needs of a specific group of students. Modifications can be made to the content, process, and/or product of learning. Making modifications is one way to differentiate instruction.
Types of Modifications
There are three types of modifications that can be made to the education of a student with special needs: curriculum, environmental, and instructional.
Curriculum modifications involve changes to the content or sequence of what is being taught. For example, a student who is working below grade level might have a modified curriculum that includes only the essential skills and knowledge for their grade, or they might have a modified curriculum that is presented in a different sequence than what is typically taught.
Environmental modifications involve changes to the physical environment in which instruction takes place. For example, a student who is easily distracted might benefit from having a smaller class size, or a student who has difficulty sitting still for long periods of time might benefit from being allowed to stand during class.
Instructional modifications involve changes to the way instruction is delivered. For example, a student who has difficulty understanding lectures might benefit from having information presented in written form, or a student who has difficulty processing information verbally might benefit from having information presented visually.
