The Aims of Education

Education has many aims or purposes, but the primary aim of education is to develop the abilities and character of the individual so that he or she can live a prosperous and fulfilling life. Other aims of education include developing a person’s intellect and abilities, preparing them for a vocation, instilling morality, and teaching them how to become good citizens.

The Development of the Individual

The primary aim of education should be the development of the individual, rather than the acquisition of facts and skills. The success of any educational system should be judged by how well it contributes to the all-round development of the personality of its students, rather than by how much it enables them to score in examinations.

The purpose of education is not simply to prepare individuals for a job or profession, but to help them develop into well-rounded human beings who are able to think critically, solve problems creatively, and communicate effectively. In addition, education should equip individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to participate actively in society and contribute to the betterment of their communities.

The Development of the Community

The aim of education should be the development of the individual within the community. The individual has a responsibility to themselves and to the community in which they live, and education should be geared towards helping them fulfil that responsibility.

The community also has a responsibility to the individual, and education should help the individual to contribute to the community in a positive way. In turn, the community should provide opportunities for the individual to develop their talents and abilities.

The Aims of Education in the United States

The aim of education is to develop the whole child so they are able to lead a fulfilling and successful life. In the United States, education is compulsory and free up to the age of 16. There are three aims of education in the United States: to prepare young people for citizenship, to prepare them for employment, and to help them develop into well-rounded individuals.

The Development of the Individual

In the United States, the aim of education has always been the development of the individual. This ideal is reflected in the language of the Declaration of Independence, which asserts that all individuals have certain “inalienable rights,” including “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

The Constitution does not mention education specifically, but the Supreme Court has ruled that it is a fundamental right covered by the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. In other words, education is not a privilege extended by the government to those who can afford it or who meet certain conditions; it is a right guaranteed to all citizens.

The ideal of individual development also finds expression in some of the most important documents in American history. Thomas Jefferson and other Founding Fathers believed that education was essential to maintaining a vibrant democracy. In a letter to George Wythe, Jefferson wrote: “I think by far the most important bill in our whole code is that for the diffusion of knowledge among the people… No other sure foundation can be devised for the preservation of freedom and happiness.”

More than 150 years later, President Abraham Lincoln made a similar argument in his famous Gettysburg Address: “We here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from this earth.”

For Lincoln as for Jefferson, democracy depends on an educated citizenry; democracy cannot survive without an investment in education.

The Development of the Community

It is important to remember that the aim of education has always been, and will continue to be, the development of the individual and the community. The former has always been primary, but in a dynamic social order, the two cannot be separated. The one is inconceivable without the other.

The community must ever be kept in mind, for it is only in and through the community that the individual can find his highest fulfillment. The development of character, intelligence, and ability for effective self-direction must needs be slower if all too often they are to be wrenched out of their natural setting and transplanted into an artificial environment where they cannot take root and grow. The successful development of any organic entity demands continuity of environment.
