There are many reasons why American students fare so poorly compared to their counterparts in other countries. Our schools are more racially and socioeconomically segregated than those in most other developed nations, which leads to large achievement gaps between white and nonwhite students as well as between wealthy and poor students. Our teachers are paid less than teachers in most other countries (with the exception of Portugal), which makes it difficult to attract and retain high-quality candidates. And our students spend less time in school than students do in nearly every other developed country—an average of just under 900 hours per year compared to over 1,000 hours per year for OECD countries as a whole.

But they often lack the resources they need to be successful—resources like small class sizes, modern facilities , adequate supplies ,and up-to-date textbooks .And they are often asked to do more with less: In 2014–15 ,the average elementary school teacher was responsible for teaching 26 pupils ,while the OECD average was just 21 pupils per class .
Given all these challenges ,it’s no wonder that American students continue to lag behind their counterparts around the world .It’s time for us to invest in our public schools so that every child has a chance to succeed .
